Out And About in The Mersey Forest> Mill Wood & Alderwood

Mill Wood and Alderwood cover an area of 17.95ha, close to Speke in Liverpool. It is one of only two sites in the Liverpool area classified as ancient woodland. Mill Wood is a popular site with local residents, and hosts a volunteer group. The Friends of Mill and Alder Woods Group has been meeting since April 2001 and was set up with the aim of protecting and preserving the wood for future generations.

The main species in the woodland are oak, ash, alder, elm, birch, sycamore, willow and hawthorn. The majority of the ground flora is bramble and bracken, which in some areas is hindering natural regeneration of trees, although it does provide some valuable wildlife areas. There are carpets of English bluebells on the leeward side of the wood and also a pond for fishing.
